Africa Journal Day 8

Right after breakfast we took our Hermanus winery map and randomly chose 3 places. Our first stop was Herman Winery. The tasting room was in a little white cottage overlooking a small pond and sprawling vineyards. The owner and I talked about the show Four Weddings, because that’s all she knows about American weddings, which is not a good thing. They actually host quite a few weddings here and she was married not too long ago here by the pond. Because it was a small winery they only offered 2 wines, honey and olive oil. We shot the olive oil which made me gag, but the honey was the best I have ever had, so we bought some for our parents and more Sauvignon Blanc for us.

Next we headed right down the street to Southern Right winery where we bought even MORE Sauvignon Blanc and more honey! Either Savignon Blanc is that much better here or my wine palate is changing quickly because now I LOVE it.  P1011404

Next winery up was Hermanuspietersfontein winery. I loved their wine but we only bought one bottle because I know our suitcases are getting very heavy and we still have 5 more flights. The Hermanuspietersfontein tasting room was located in the city of Hermanus so it did not have the same spectacular views as everyother winery but the great wine more than made up for it. Speaking of all the wonderful S.A. wineries, I also could not help but notice the thick manual of all the South Africa wines for 2012. You could be in South Africa for weeks just touring wineries. It is also notable that Hermanuspietersfontein had the oddest unisex bathroom sign we have ever seen.

After Hermanuspietersfontein, and before we got too drunk (really missing our D.D. Ian now), we grabbed lunch and shopped as we waited for our whale watching boat to arrive. I really wish we didn’t see the boat arrive, because people were getting sick and being carried off the boat. The wind here is no joke, and now I’m nervous.

Hermanus is home to the mating season for Southern Right whales from June to December. Because of this we got to see a lot of whales!!! At one point one of the whales was spitting on our boat and then breached right in front of us looking like he was going to land on the front of the boat, it was pandemonium. The seasickness was killing me but I knew the seas were bad when Bret started looking ill. As awesome as it  was, I was happy when we were done, and back whale watching on land!!!!!!

What a crazy wonderful day. This was our last day in Hermanus. We leave for our Safari tomorrow. Petro packed us a breakfast because we will have to leave at 5 am for our trip to the airport for flight number 4 of our honeymoon=/
